December 31 | Stand Your Ground

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | Ephesians 6:13, “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

Lesson 31 | Stand Your Ground

Whether you like it or not you are in a battle.  This battle has been going on since the Garden of Eden.  Long before you ever were born the sides were determined and the battle line drawn.  On one side is the devil with those who willing choose to following him in rebellion and their motto is, “my will be done.”  On the other side is Jesus along with all who follow Him in humility and their motto is, “not my will but God’s will be done.”

This battle is not fought with swords and guns or any other kind of earthly weapons, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.  This is not a battle just for the strongest men among us or for those who enlisted in the Army.  No, this is a spiritual battle that by its very nature enlists every man, woman, and child.  No one can avoid this fight.

The good news is that Jesus came almost 2,000 years ago and defeated our enemy and destroyed all of his kingdom, 1 John 3:8.  The bad news is not everyone has switched sides.  Some even rejected Jesus as their only hope of victory and are now in hell waiting to be cast into the lake of fire with the devil and his demons.  As a result, eternity is at stake in this battle and only those who confess Jesus as their Lord and King are saved.

For those of us who have switched sides and are now reborn into the Kingdom of God we are commanded to put the whole armor of God on and stand our ground.  We are to stand our ground until either we die or Jesus comes back and establishes His eternal Kingdom on earth.  We cannot predict how the devil will fight against us but we can be sure his evil days will come.  Some battles may involve our families, others our communities, and some our very own souls.  However, what we can be sure of is that no matter what battle we face, “greater is He that is within us than he that is in the world,” 1 John 4:4

I challenge you to put on the full armor of God and stand your ground and when you have done everything you can- continue to stand.  If you should stumble and fall, quickly get back up and stand your ground again.  Should people leave you and disappoint you continue to stand your ground.  And if you think the battle will never end, don’t give up but rather praise God in the midst of your trials and stand your ground. Stand.

Here are three ways to stand your ground: (1) Build your life on the foundation of God’s Word; (2) Put on the whole armor of God and never take it off; and lastly, (3) Depend upon God in prayer for victory in every battle you face.

Reflection | Are you willing to stand your ground?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand your ground.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to those who have been defeated by the enemy.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing your ground read the following books, “God’s General’s,” by Roberts Liardon and Foxes Book of Martyrs,” by John Foxe.

December 30 | Standing for a Cultural Revolution

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.”

Lesson 30 | Standing for a Cultural Revolution

The definition of a cultural revolution is, “the inward turning of a society’s value system to the commands of God resulting in the forsaking of sin for the righteousness of God in the culture as a whole,” Jonah 3:7-10, Acts 8:4-8, & Acts 19:19.  In other words, when Christians live like Christ everywhere they go everyone in a society is positively impacted.  This cultural shift may move slowly like it does currently in China with the underground house church movement or fast like it has in the African nations of Kenya and Uganda.  Fast or slow, it is impossible for a culture to stay the same when Christians fully live out their daily lives as disciples of Christ.

Within 300 years of Jesus’ ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit the Roman Empire became a Christian nation.  Though marrying the state with the church resulted in some harmful experiences for both Roman citizens and clergy, however, the truth still remains that Jesus brought Rome to its knees.  Also, during the founding of the United States of America, currently the most powerful and wealthiest nation in the world, the Bible was the main source for civil laws, rights and liberties, schools and universities, governmental structures, and economic policies.

America’s founding President George Washington in his first Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1789 boldly declared over the newly founded nation, “that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.”

Therefore, if nations and cultures turn away from God and His virtue as the U.S. has done we can only expect to suffer harm and punishment.  The reason why Americans are plagued with violence and corruption is because we have left the solid foundation of God for the sandy ways of men.  However, when the lights go out in your house you don’t curse the darkness and expect change.  Rather you change the light bulb.  In the same way, we cannot curse the wickedness of our culture and expect change we must change our values and shine like the lights Jesus made us to be.

Certainly, we should allow for people’s personal freedoms (live and let live) but I believe that when the church displays the power and love God in their daily lives the majority of people will choose again to follow the ways of God in their own free will.  And just like Washington prayed we will “promote the practice of true religion and virtue!”

Here are three ways to stand for a cultural revolution: (1) Live your life for God in such a way that people around you will want the kind of life you possess; (2) Practice the values of your faith in everything you do- on the job, when you vote, with your neighbors, etc.; and lastly, (3) Pray for God to change the hearts of people so they will see beauty of His ways.  May His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven!

Reflection | Do you believe God can transform your culture?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for a cultural revolution.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to people in your everyday life with the salvation, wisdom, and power of God.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for a cultural revolution read the following books, “Revolution in the Church,” by Michael Brown and Turn the World Upside Down,” by Michael Maiden.

December 29 | Standing for Spiritual Revival

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | Hosea 6:1, “Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.”

Lesson 29 | Standing for Spiritual Revival

The definition of revival is, “a spiritual awakening of the church in their love for God and people that impacts the community with salvation and community transformation.” Often times this kind of move of God could be seen in the Old Testament as the prophets would express the heart of God towards backslidden Israel.  Like in the verse above Hosea was pleading with the people of Israel in the 8th century BC to come back to God and ask for His healing and restoration.

Hosea went on to write in the same chapter, “Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”  First, for something to be revived or brought back to life it must have been living.  Second, revival is all about coming back to God and following His ways.  Likewise, revival is not for sinners who are dead spiritually but rather it is for saints who have lost their first love.

Since the normative state of the New Testament church was to be alive the book of Acts doesn’t mention the need for the disciples to experience a spiritual revival.  However, by the end of the 1st century John records in Revelation, the last written book of New Testament, that some of the churches had become so lukewarm and filled with compromise that Jesus actually threatened to spit them out of His mouth, Revelation 3:16.

Therefore, how much more do the great majority of churches in the U.S. (and many around the world) also need to be revived.  Some churches have gone so far from the truth that they ordain homosexuals in the ministry.  There are many churches with good doctrines but they have lost their passion to win the lost and make disciples.  Many pastors are so concerned with preaching to those in the pews that they have forgotten about reaching those on the streets!  Still others have polluted the pure gospel with greed, lawlessness, and entertainment so that the church cannot change the world because the world has changed the church.

I can speak personally as a leader in the U.S. that we need to see a massive awakening of the church in our country or we will lose an entire generation.  Already stats point to just 7% of Americans are committed Christians and the number is a low as 4% with those under 30!  At a time when we have the biggest churches, hippest music, coolest websites & videos, and the most popular speakers the gospel ship is sinking like never before.  Christianity overall has declined in the U.S. while Islam and Atheism have grown exponentially.  We need a move of God and we need it now.  Our prayer should be, “Start in my life, family, and church!”

Here are three ways to stand for spiritual revival: (1) No matter the cost become fully obedient to Christ and live 100% for Jesus the rest of your life; (2) Join a church that desires nothing less than total obedience to God’s Word; and lastly, (3) Reach out to lukewarm Christians and inspire change by your Christ-centered life!

Reflection | Do you believe churches need to experience a spiritual revival?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for spiritual revival.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to local church members and leaders to encourage them to fully return to Jesus.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for spiritual revival read the following books, “Why Revival Tarries,” by Leonard Ravenhill and Revival Fire,” by Wesley Duewel.

December 28 | Standing for Personal Accountability

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | James 5:16, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Lesson 28 | Standing for Personal Accountability

Everyone on the job is accountable to someone and if serious problems arise there are consequences in the form of discipline.  If the troublemaker on the job wishes to remain, they will have to endure the discipline for their negative actions or they will be fired.  Similarly everyone in society is held accountable to the laws of the land and if they break them they have to suffer the consequences.  Even violating the law and receiving parking tickets, if left unpaid, could result in someone being sent to jail.

However, today in many churches, people are not accountable to anyone and so when they sin and cause harm to the Body of Christ there is no godly discipline.  Every church should have godly accountability and discipline according to that what Jesus taught.  As a result, when we have personal accountability in the church we then will be better people of honesty and integrity on our jobs, in our community, and everywhere we go.

Jesus was so direct with His “problem solving technique” that He said if a fellow brother didn’t repent of their sin, they were to be treated as a “pagan” or a “tax collector.”  It was not okay with Jesus to have “hypocrites” and “secret sinners” hiding in the church.  He said in Matthew 18:15-17, “15 If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

Therefore, today’s church leadership must take the appropriate actions to insure the local gathering of believers is holy and in biblical order.  Leaders are to “rid the church of yeast” and “judge those within” so God’s people can live without rebellion or willful sin in their midst, 1 Corinthians 5:1-13.  No good boss would allow someone to stay on the job that continually slandered and discouraged the rest of the workers and neither should the church embrace nor accept that which Jesus has said to rebuke and reject.

Here are three ways to stand for personal accountability: (1) Be in a trustworthy accountable relationship with someone of the same gender; (2) Continually grow in your faith and walk with God; and lastly, (3) Be a person of good character and godly morals in all that you do and receive good church discipline when needed.

Reflection | Do you have an accountability partner?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for personal accountability.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to those who need accountability.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for personal accountability read the following books, “Covenant Discipleship,” by David Watson and Great Excuses of the Bible,” by Howard Goldthwaite.

December 27 | Standing for Holiness

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | 1 Thessalonians 5:23, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Lesson 27 | Standing for Holiness

When Jesus came to this earth He walked in perfect holiness.  He lived a life that was separate from the sinful world.  Jesus taught His disciples to come out from the world and live like Him.  For you to truly be the disciple Jesus wants you to be you must desire to be holy like Him, 2 Corinthians 6:17.

Peter also outlined the call to be holy in 1 Peter 1:13-17, “13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.”

Consequently, holiness is not just following “rules,” though God’s commandments are to be obeyed, but the heart of holiness is to desire to be like God in character, thought, and deed.  Jesus said to be perfect like your Father in heaven is perfect, Matthew 5:48.  God knows that no one is born perfect that is why He sent His Son Jesus to die for man’s sins so we could be born again perfect (whole and complete).  God’s plan was not only for us to be saved from our sins but also to be sanctified from our sin.

Jesus told us to be perfect because He not only came to give us salvation but He also came to give us total and complete sanctification.  “Sanctification” means “to be made perfectly holy; without an sin, stain or blemish.”  Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 that when we were saved we were also fully washed, sanctified, and justified, “9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

You probably didn’t even know that when you asked Jesus to forgive your sins that you were not only forgiven of sin but you were set free from the power of sin. The power of sin was broken in your life and the presence of sin was totally removed.  Therefore, because you are in Christ, God no longer sees your sins, but He sees Jesus and His righteousness.  Therefore, by the righteousness of Jesus you are able to live a holy life free from sin- now that’s good news!

Paul declared in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”  Now according to Paul in the opening verse you are to allow God to keep your whole spirit, soul, and body blameless until Christ returns.  And if you were to sin let the Holy Spirit sanctify again “through and through.”  So the normative and natural state of your life is to be holy like God is holy!

Therefore stand for holiness in the following three ways: (1) Believe and declare that by the blood of Jesus you have been saved from the power, presence, and penalty of sin; (2) Live holy by the indwelling power and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit; and lastly, (3) Teach others to forsake all their sin and live fully for Jesus!

Reflection | Are you holy like God is holy?  Why or why not?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for holiness.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to those who live unholy lives- both inside the church and outside in the world.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for holiness read the following books, “The Fire of His Holiness,” by Sergio Scataglini and The Knowledge of the Holy,” by A.W. Tozer.

December 26 | Standing for Christian Charity

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | Matthew 25:35-36, “35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

Lesson 26 | Standing for Christian Charity

In the above verses Jesus gives a picture of Judgment Day.  According to this entire passage known as “The Sheep and the Goats,” one of the main things that He is going to judge us all by is “acts of kindness.”  These acts of kindness such as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, and clothing the naked will be considered as done unto Jesus Himself if we do them in His name.

Therefore, every disciple of Christ should stand for Christian Charity (acts of kindness done in Jesus’ name).  On average Christians account for the largest single group of people who give to charitable causes accounting for over $545 billion dollars worldwide.  Though this number is enormous it is only 1.8% of the Christian’s annual income, which is around $30.5 trillion dollars (totaled by adding together all who claim Christ around the world).

Just in the U.S. the average Christian currently gives less to the church in terms of percentage than during the Great Depression, from 3.3% to 2.6% of their total income.  As a result, we as Christians can do more for others if we do less for ourselves.  Do we really need the latest phone, car, TV, or computer?  I believe we should all challenge ourselves to spend less and give away more.  For Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Here are three ways to stand for Christian charity: (1) Try to give 10% (a tithe) to your local church and 5% to charities (including missions and local church outreaches); (2) Be generous with those around you.  For example, carpool, offer a free lunch to your coworkers, and consider giving away what you would try to sell in a “garage sale;” and lastly, (3) Pray for God to use you to touch people’s hearts with your life by meeting their needs.

Reflection | Do you give to Christian charities?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for Christian charity.  (2) Pray that God will use you to be a generous giver.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for Christian charity read the following books, “Compassion, Justice, and the Christian Life,” by Robert Lupton and When Helping Hurts,” by Steve Corbett.

December 25 | Standing for Marriage & Family

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | Ephesians 5:31-32, “31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.”

Lesson 25 | Standing for Marriage & Family

God said it was not good for man to be alone so He gave Eve to Adam and told them to be fruitful and multiply, Genesis 1:28.  The first organization God started was a family.  Families are designed to be a place where relational and emotional needs can be met everyday.  When a family is built on the Word of God it is the single greatest force on the earth.  But when it is built on the flesh and is given over to sin, the family can bring much hurt to a person.

You must decide that you and your house are going to serve the Lord together.  You must choose that each member in the family is going to be the person God commanded them to be and that there will be unity in the home. When the family operates in divine unity and structure God will pour out His blessings upon the house and all who live in it.

One of the newest and most destructive trends eroding the foundations of marriage and the family in the U.S. is couples living together and not being married.  Between 2006 and 2010, nearly half of heterosexual women (48 percent) ages 15 to 44 said they were not married to their spouse or partner when they first lived with them; that is up from 43 percent in 2002, and 34 percent in 1995.

Nearly 75 percent of all women ages 30 or younger said they lived with a partner outside of marriage at some point in their lives.  And sadly, the length of time people now live together before marriage is increasing from 13 months in 1995 to 22 months in 2010.

As a result of living together before marriage; (a) Only 31% of women today are married as compared to 92% in 1920, which is basically a 60% drop in marriage over the last 100 years; (b) The average age for a woman to get married is at a record high of 27 years old; and lastly, (c) If the cohabitating couple ever does get married (only around 1 out of 5 actually do), they have an 80% higher rate of divorce than those who didn’t live together before marriage!

Therefore, make a stand for godly marriage and families in the following five ways: (1) Read God’s Word together; (2) Worship and sing songs to God; (3) Pray and lift up each other’s needs to God; (4) Talk to each other about things that really matter in life.  Ask each member what his or her specific needs are and help them through the hard times; and lastly, (5) Plan special days and events just to be alone as a family and try to make quality time with each member every day.

God gave the human race marriage and family so that we could feel love from each other and not be alone in this world.  Decide right now to personally stand for your family!

Reflection | In what ways can you stand for marriage and family in your life?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for godly marriages and families.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to others who don’t have a healthy marriage or family.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for marriage and family read the following books, “Five Love Languages,” by Gary Chapman and God, Marriage, and Family,” by Andreas Kostenberger.

December 24 | Standing for Prayer

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “…pray continually.”

Lesson 24 | Standing for Prayer

The night of Jesus’ arrest He asked His disciples if they could pray for just an hour, but they ended up falling asleep.  The Bible says in Mark 14:37, “Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?”

I still believe Jesus is asking us as His disciples, “Can you pray with me for an hour?”  We will sit down and watch a two-hour movie and time will just fly by.  We will watch our favorite sporting games and three hours will pass like seconds and we will even get excited when it goes into “overtime.”  However, when it comes to daily private prayer with the Lord hardly any Christian spends an hour or more in devotion to God.  Plus, when many do, it becomes as a “chore” instead of a joy.

We as a church should be ashamed and embarrassed that the Lord Himself has asked us to pray with Him for an hour and we put everything before our time alone with Him and give Him the last seconds of our day.  We come to Him when we please and often make our prayer time like a burden we want to be done with as soon as possible; Lord forgive us!

Is it any wonder we don’t see our lost family members saved?  Is it any wonder our schools are still full of violence?  Is it any wonder that our church services are weak and powerless?  Is it any wonder our marriages are falling apart?  Is it any wonder that liberalism is taking over our universities?  Is it any wonder that most Christians feel weak and beat up?  Is it any wonder there is corruption in our government and big businesses?  Is it any wonder our children have more in common with MTV than the book of Acts?  When one looks at the prayer life of most Christians is it any wonder we are the way we are? If Jesus, God in the flesh, made time to pray for hours at a time, how much more should we pray for at least an hour a day?

Make a personal stand for prayer in the following three ways: (1) Develop a consistent prayer life everyday; (2) Encourage your family and those around you to faithfully pray and seek God’s face; and lastly, (3) Pray without ceasing.  Make prayer and communion with God as normal as thinking to yourself.  Become aware of God’s presence everywhere you go.

Reflection | How is your prayer life?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for prayer.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out to others who don’t pray to encourage them having a prayer life.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for prayer read the following books, “Prayer,” by E.M. Bounds and The Fourth Demension,” by David Cho.

December 23 | Standing for the Great Commission

Series The Life of Revival

Scripture | Matthew 28:19-20, “19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Lesson 23 | Standing for the Great Commission

The only way the world can change is through the power of the gospel.  The only way the gospel can be heard is if disciples preach it through whatever means possible.  And the only way disciples can preach the gospel is if they themselves have been trained and sent out.

That is why Paul wrote the following in Romans 10:14-15, “14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Therefore, it is a God-given command for every follower of Christ to be a trained disciple that is sent out to make new disciples.  In the above passage Jesus gives the clearest way in which disciples are made and sent out.  As a result, these powerful words of Jesus have been known in church history as the “Great Commission.”  The Great Commission simply refers to the important and powerful command for disciples to be trained and commissioned to make new disciples.

The command of Jesus to “go and make disciple of all nations” is for all believers at all times.  There is no one that is exempt from Jesus’ Words.  No matter who you are, what you do for a career, your level of education, personality, national identity, or schedule you are to be responsible to stand for the Great Commission.  Who are you currently discipling?

Here are three ways you can stand for the Great Commission, (1) Be a disciple that is trained in the local church to be sent out to make new disciples; (2) Pray for God to use you to make disciples for the rest of your life; and lastly, (3) Encourage every believer in Christ to obey Jesus’ command to be a disciple maker of the nations.

Reflection | In what ways can you stand for discipleship in your community?

Action | (1) Explain from the Bible why you should stand for the Great Commission.  (2) Pray that God will use you to reach out and build the church with disciples that make disciples.  (3) Lastly, for more information regarding standing for the Great Commission read the following books, “Growing True Disciples,” by George Barna and Revolution in World Missions,” by K.P. Yohannan.
