August 1 | Does God Exist?

Series The Purpose Filled Life

Scripture Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

Lesson 1 | Does God Exist?

Yes, God does exist!  Paul in the above passage taught that everyone could find clear evidence that God exists simply by looking at creation.  If there is a watch it implies a watchmaker.  If there is a car, there is a carmaker.  And certainly, if we see a “creation,” there must be a Creator.

However, I’ve actually heard some people say, “I don’t believe in God- I believe in science!”  The person making this statement has no real understanding of either.  Christians have always believed in science, which is the gathering of knowledge.  For example, the scientist who actually established the scientific method itself (hypothesis, experimentation, etc…) was a Christian, Francis Bacon.

Sir Isaac Newton, who was one of the most influential scientists in history was also a devote Christian who wrote more about the Bible than science and said, Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done.”

There are many more evidences for God’s existence; I will name just a few; (a) The Evidence From Design: The universe’s laws are precisely ordered for life- without these properties life couldn’t exist; (b) The Evidence From Objective Morality: Man’s inward moral compass proves a moral law giver- for we all generally feel the same towards evil; and (c) The Evidence From First Cause: Something cannot come from nothing, thus, everything that has a beginning has a cause.

Paul also wrote that the best way to come God was to seek Him by coming to His Son Jesus, Romans 10:13.  If you have doubts about God or don’t even believe He exists- I challenge to pray, read the New Testament starting with John, and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.

Then pray something like this, “Father, I come to you in the name of your Son Jesus and ask you to forgive me of my sins.  Please come into my life, fill me with your Holy Spirit, and give me a new life. Amen.” I believe if you truly humble yourself, seek Him, and open up your heart to Him you will know Him personally like I do!

For those who already know and love God- let us be eager to share His message of redemption to the world around us. And if they desire evidence of His existence let us use science to help open their eyes!

Reflection | Do you believe God exists? Why or why not?

Action | (1) If you don’t believe in God take steps to study His Word starting in John to develop your faith, Romans 10:17. (2) Those who believe in God- don’t be afraid of science because whatever is true has come from God!  (3) Lastly, as Christians, we should always be looking for people in our lives that we can pray for and help discover the truth of God’s existence.
